Enterprise Legacy Modernization with Generative AI
Helping organizations understand, preserve, and modernize mission-critical enterprise systems while protecting the business knowledge embedded within them.
The focus is not simply on replacing old technology. It is on recovering and understanding the business rules, policies, decisions, exceptions, dependencies, and operational knowledge that must survive modernization—using Generative AI where it can assist discovery, while keeping validation, governance, and authority in human hands.

How I Can Help
Every legacy environment is different. The work begins by understanding what the organization has, what business knowledge the systems contain, what must be preserved, and what evidence is needed before modernization decisions are made.
Legacy System Understanding
Analyze existing programs, data structures, documentation, interfaces, dependencies, and operational processes to develop a clearer understanding of how a legacy system works today and where critical knowledge may be hidden or incomplete.
Business Knowledge & Rule Discovery
Identify and organize candidate business rules, policies, decisions, exceptions, dependencies, and operational knowledge embedded across code, data, documentation, and other system artifacts. Generative AI may assist this discovery process, while experienced human review remains essential to validate meaning and establish authority.
Modernization Analysis & Planning
Assess modernization options in the context of the existing system, recovered business knowledge, dependencies, operational requirements, risks, and organizational priorities. The objective is to help determine what should change, what must be preserved, and what requires further investigation before implementation begins.
Verification, Testing & Knowledge Preservation
Develop and strengthen verification approaches that compare modernization results against established business rules, expected outcomes, and operational requirements. Testing, provenance, authorization, and change history can also help ensure that newly validated knowledge becomes part of the organization’s continuing institutional memory.
How I Approach the Work
I begin with investigation rather than assumptions. AI can assist from the earliest stage by examining available programs, data, documentation, and other system artifacts to help develop an initial understanding of the existing environment. AI-assisted discovery can produce documentation for further investigation, provide a cross-check against existing artifacts, surface gaps and inconsistencies, and potentially shorten the discovery period. The resulting knowledge must then be reviewed and validated by people who understand the system and the business it supports.
Once the existing system and its business knowledge have been sufficiently understood and validated, they establish a working baseline for change. That baseline provides the reference point against which proposed enhancements or modernization can be analyzed. At this stage, Generative AI can assist in exploring alternatives, analyzing potential impacts, developing and documenting proposed changes, and supporting implementation and testing. The authority to approve consequential changes, however, remains with the appropriate human decision makers.
After a change is implemented, verification should establish that the intended business behavior has been preserved or correctly modified. The change, its purpose, authorization, implementation, impact, tests, and results should then become part of the system’s continuing institutional memory, providing evidence and knowledge for future maintenance, enhancement, and modernization (the working baseline for future work).

This working approach represents a proposition for investigation rather than a prescribed implementation model. The precise controls governing verification, acceptance, baseline updates, and institutional-memory updates may vary by organization and require further investigation.
